LUMINA

Interactive Figma Prototype

LUMINA is an app that gives users the freedom to design their own lava lamps by tweaking a vast array of parameters. The design aims to adhere to the theme of lava lamps while being visually pleasing and functional.

This project began during a stressful period at university, when I found comfort in the calming effect of lava lamps. I wanted to capture that meditative quality in a digital format, allowing users to design and experiment with their own customizable lava lamps.

My inspiration came from a Figma Community post called "Attablob — create animated blobs!", which demonstrated creative uses of blur and blend modes to simulate organic, fluid shapes. I adapted this method to recreate the flowing motion of lava lamp blobs, using blur to merge shapes and color dodge to sharpen their edges.

The result was an interactive Figma prototype where users could design their own lava lamp by adjusting colors and shapes. To keep focus on the lamp itself, I used a minimal black-and-white interface. The outcome is an app that can mirror the calming effect of a real lava lamp.

Below is the Figma prototype for the project. As a sidenote, you may need to refresh the prototype for the lava lamp aspect to show up due to how the blobs are animated.
